Ventilation Blocks: What They Are For and How to Choose
Ventilation blocks are precast reinforced-concrete elements with ready-made ducts for ventilation and smoke removal. We explain what they are for, which types exist and how to choose.
A ventilation block is a precast reinforced-concrete element with ready-made vertical ducts for natural ventilation and smoke removal in multi-storey buildings. The blocks are installed floor by floor, and the ducts join into a continuous shaft without on-site bricklaying.
What they are for
- Remove stale air from kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms.
- Form a ready ventilation shaft — no manual duct bricklaying on site.
- Factory duct geometry gives stable draught.
- Fire-resistant and durable, with no maintenance needed inside the shaft.
Duct types
There are blocks with satellite ducts (a satellite duct on each floor connecting to a collective duct) and blocks with collective through ducts. The choice depends on the number of storeys and the project ventilation scheme.
How to choose
- Number of storeys and the ventilation scheme in the project.
- Number and purpose of ducts — exhaust, smoke removal.
- Floor height (to match the block height).
- Compatibility with floor slabs and other precast elements.
- Project and current code requirements.
Advantages of the precast solution
- Fast crane installation together with the building shell.
- Factory quality and precise duct geometry.
- Fewer wet processes on site.
- Durability of reinforced concrete.
